EnChanted Images: The Voice of Sainte-Foy at Conques

The eleventh-century Romanesque church of Sainte-Foy, in Latin Sancta Fides, or “Holy Faith,” calls to us across time to a bygone era where the rhythm of life seems to slow down and nature reclaims the ambient soundscape. Sainte-Foy (290–303 CE) was a Christian girl who at the age of thirteenth defied the pagan governor Dacianus and suffered martyrdom for refusing to renounce her faith. She died in Agen, a town in southwestern France. Many centuries later monks from Conques rescued her relics and brought them to their monastery circa 866. At that point the monastic leadership at Conques commissioned a golden statue, in which they deposited the cranium of Sainte-Foy. As the institution gained prominence in the eleventh century, new effort was expended to enhance its soft power: an impressive architecture, relief sculpture, and a music repertoire celebrating the Passio of the saint. These songs have never been transcribed in modern notation and re-sung until the Stanford University’s “EnChanted Images Project, (2021-present, https://enchanted images.stanford.edu), directed by Prof. Bissera V. Pentcheva. Tonight, you will hear selections of the Office (Festal Liturgy) written in the eleventh century. The program traces the life and martyrdom of the saint. The chants are accompanied by the image of the golden statue of Sainte-Foy projected on the stage.

This concert is done in collaboration with Prof. Martina Saltamacchia at the University of Nebraska and The Schola of Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary FSSP, director: Nicholas Lemme. The concert and lecture have been co-sponsed by the Ilene Forsyth Fund at the International Center for Medieval Art.
